Getting Your Interior Design and Decorating Started Right

etting Your Interior DesignPrinciples Are Principles Forever

Interior design and decorating is one of the oldest of all the arts. Properly understood, it can be very exciting and rewarding to engage in. All you have to do is apply the correct and appropriate formulas, adapted to your budget.

It is very important and necessary to find out what you really need and want; then follow a few age-old foundational principles, in order have the success that you are looking for. A few easily understood principles will enable you to work out combinations and arrangements that will be appropriate and therefore satisfying to you, no matter what type of room you are planning.

Make It Easy On Yourself

When designing or decorating a room or a whole house, you can help yourself a great deal if you make a careful analysis of yourself and your family before you began; such as what you like, what you want, what you do, what you hope to do someday, etc.

Put everything down on paper. Be guided by this analysis in your choice of furniture, arrangements, color schemes, and accessories. Also, write down not only what you want it to look like, but what you want it to feel like as well. A look without the appropriate feeling and ambiance is nothing, in my book.

Make The Right Decisions The First Time

The best way to do it right, once, the first time is to have a plan. This will be a sketch or drawing that is drawn to scale. It is critical that the floor plan of the room you plan; is to scale. This will usually mean that 1/4 inch will equal 1 foot; or if you want it larger, then draw it to 1/2 inch equals 1 foot. This means that 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch, will represent an actual 12 inches or 1 foot of real space.

You must do the same thing with your furniture. It must be drawn or sketched to scale as well. Otherwise, you will definitely have a wrong perception of reality. You must do everything to scale on paper, because it allows you to have much more fun and freedom of expression, as well as allowing solutions to come to your mind that you would never have thought of otherwise.

Doing floor plans is the professional way to start. Amateurs skip this, which is one reason they are amateurs; even if they call themselves decorators or designers. If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail, whether you know it or not.

Eliminating “Paralysis of Analysis”

The preliminary analysis of your home interior design and decorating problem should include answers to several definite questions. Think of this as the Sherlock Holmes phase. You want to ask the right questions; to get the right answers; so you can get the right results. Your answers to the right questions will have a deciding influence on the various phases of your plan. Thinking things through will save you time and money, as well as preventing possible and probable disappointments with your results.

Some Words of Caution

Do not decorate or design in haste; and later repent at leisure! Even if you have the money to carry out your whole design and decorating program, don’t be rushed into buying anything which will compromise the effect you want.

Don’t be discouraged if you have to operate on a budget. Decide what you can comfortably spend in the beginning, and put most of it into basic pieces that will be a permanent investment in your satisfaction and comfort. Then, spread the rest of it out over “makeshifts” which will do until they can be replaced. These pieces will be temporary until you can afford something better; or they may turn out to be so charming and so useful that you will not want to give them up and you can allocate them to other areas of your environment.

As you work your plan, you may find that parts of it need altering as you go along; because you’ve found that they can be improved. However, make sure the contemplated improvements fit into the original plan or concept. Remember, it’s not only about the look; but the look and the feel or ambiance that you are after.

Don’t be tempted for the sake of a bargain, or any other reason to spend time or money on a single piece or article which will not add to the effectiveness of your preconceived design or decorative scheme, as you have outlined it from the beginning. Also remember; proper, prior planning prevents poor performance!

It’s vital that you realize that you can spend a great deal of money, or a comparatively small sum; as long as it is realistic; and get very pleasing results if you have a plan and knowledge.

An Important Closing Comment

After you work things out on paper, including your floor plans and your documentation of your questions and answers; it must then be translated into action. Always look at the colors and designs in the environment where they are going to be used, and under the lighting conditions there; both natural and artificial. Color is how you light it! Therefore, never guess how textures, colors, designs, or fabrics, etc., will go with each other, outside of the final environment they will be residing in.

Must Have Decor Items For Your First House

Wall adornmentsGetting into your first house is an exciting chance to try out your décor ideas in your own living space. It is your chance to experiment with different ideas until you get the right mix. You will probably not have the right budget to go riot in the stores as you would like, but there are some must have décor items.

You can check out any place that sells shabby chic home décor for many tasteful items. If you intend for your house to have an aesthetic appeal essential décor items to have are;

Personal statement of color

Nothing pronounces your personality louder than the colors you like. Feel free to experiment with different hues and tones. If you are not sure, go for blue and cream which blend, complement and contrast well with many colors

Wall adornments

The simplest way to go about this is by wall hangings and art. You can get a few tasteful shabby chic wall hangings for your living room to start with. Alternatively, you can go with DIY art which announces your creativity better.

Curtains

As much as they offer privacy, your curtains should reflect taste. Paper or plastic curtains are simply not acceptable anymore. Choose fabric curtains that have the right color that will blend with what is on the wall.

Storage

Where duffel bags were adequate in your dorm room, you will have to get space for your newly found acquisitions. This calls for creativity as the space available will most likely be less than your possessions. Experimentation with colors also works here.

Floor art

Get a few floor rugs to cover the little ground available. You do not have to install Isfahan Persian to announce your fine tastes. In fact, a hand-woven DIY rug will do just fine. Creativity with patterns, colors and texture will make the space feel more lived in.

Statement item

Have an item that is personally identified with you. This is usually a memento from college, home or a gift from a special person. Antique pieces are ideal for this. DIY items are even better as they have an intimate attachment. A tasty chandelier is also very attractive.

Lighting

Tastefully done lighting and shade in attractive colors make the rooms very cozy. Let every room have lighting that suits its purpose. Colored lighting is ideal for the bedroom and bathroom while clear white light is better for your reading table.

When it comes to your first house try to go with simple ideas which work very well in a small space and the décor that makes you happy. You have to be pleased with all the things listed above, the way they blend together so when you walk in your door the view you see will make you smile.
